Directed by Róisín McBrinn, Thick as Thieves is A Theatr Clwyd & Clean Break co-production. Written by Katherine Chandler, the play premiered at Theatr Clwyd on 11 October and closes this Saturday  27 October 2018.

The play tells the story of two sisters who were raised in care but go on to live in very different worlds. Gail (Polly Frame) has struggled her whole life, in and out of the prison system. Karen (Siwan Morris) on the other hand appears to be living this picture perfect life.

Gail re-enters Karen’s life from out of the blue bringing  with her everything Karen has been running from…

The play is tense, revealing. It explores what it means to care for another person.

I spoke to Polly Frame about her role in the play. She has several theatre and television credits to her name. She has also appeared in Doctors, Casualty, Man Down, The Tunnel, Coronation Street and Holby City to name but a few.

What attracted Frame to the role in the play?

“There was so much in Katherine Chandler’s script that made me want to do it”, she explains “her dialogue is electric and both parts incredibly complex and challenging”.

Frame plays the younger sister Gail, who “struggles to function within societal rules”.

“I fell in love with the part immediately,” says Frame. “She is so many things-funny, bright, angry, chaotic, devious, hurt, big-hearted, strong-willed and ultimately a survivor, against all odds.”

“It’s been so rewarding and often painful working on who she is, how she sees the world, how she sees herself” continues Frame. “She has a wonderful immediacy about her and often no filter, which is a thrill to play”.

Does she feel the role re-enforces friendships among women?

“I don’t think the play consciously re-enforces friendships among women but there is love in there!” she explains. “What I do think the play does is expose judgement and override it, which is what I think lends it an enormous sense of hope”.

What were the most challenging aspects of playing the role for Frame?

“Technically, for both characters, the dialogue is very fast paced with lots of shifts and turns and tactics which requires a heightened alertness to each other on stage at all times,” says Frame. “Just being alive to the constant shifting of emotions Gail goes through in the real time of the play, it’s one hell of a ride!”

What does she think the audience will take away from this production?

“I hope they will have invested in these women’s lives and experiences,” concludes Frame, [and] “will leave questioning and challenging the assumptions made about them and with a greater insight into the very real and different challenges women like them have had to, and continue to, face.”
