American born Polish author Anne Applebaum will join the writer and presenter Michael Palin (A fish called Wanda, The Life of Brian) and best-selling author Helen Rappaport as the headline speakers at this year’s Dublin Festival of History.

Michael Palin will bring to life the history of the ship HMS Erebus, Anne Applebaum will discuss Stalin’s war on the Ukraine in the 1930s, while Helen Rappaport will shed new light on the murder of the Russian Imperial Family after the Bolshevik Revolution, 100 years after their death.

Dublin Festival of History is brought to us by Dublin City Council and organised by Dublin City Public Libraries.

The full programme of events was launched on 23rd August by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Nial Ring. The festival will run from 24th September to 7th October and will feature over 140 events across the city.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Nial Ring, commented:

“The Dublin Festival of History, now in its sixth year, provides a great opportunity for everyone to find out more about the rich history and heritage of Dublin and Ireland and is one of Dublin City’s Library & Archive Service unique ways of preserving, sharing and promoting this history and heritage.

This year’s programme has something for everyone, from events of global significance, including the 1918 General Election in which women were allowed vote for the first time and in which Countess Markievicz became the first female to be elected to Westminster, to the story of one of Dublin’s best-loved shops, Arnotts.

As Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘We are not makers of history – we are made by history’ – so let’s see how our history made us!”

Expect to see talks, walks, tours and exhibitions on a wide range of topics, including the historical impact of gaming, a ‘queer’ history of Kilmainham Gaol, an evening of conversation and music with Christy Dignam, numerous events marking 100 years of Irish women’s suffrage and a talk on former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ time spent in Ireland.

The Festival will round off with a ‘Big Weekend’ series of talks featuring many best-selling historians at City Hall and the Printworks, Dublin Castle, that will take place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th October.

Brendan Teeling, Dublin City Librarian, said:

“The Dublin Festival of History has been growing year-on-year since we started in 2013 and we’re delighted to launch an expanded and diverse programme of events for this year’s Festival, all completely free of charge.

We’re immensely proud of the diversity of topics, and we’re also really pleased that once again the Festival has achieved gender balance.

“In fact” he added  “we have a majority of female speakers on our line-up this year”.

“History isn’t just for academics – whether you have an interest in fashion, gaming, GAA, maps or want to know more about the first wave of Irish feminism – we’ll have an event for you. We’d encourage everyone to check out our programme, come along to an event and learn something new.”
