Shakespeare in the Squares returns to London’s garden squares and open spaces this summer, presenting Shakespeare’s timeless classic All’s Well That Ends Well, by William Shakespeare. Directed by Sioned Jones, it runs from Wednesday 5th June – Friday 12th July.
The Artiscape spoke to Kalifa Taylor who plays Helena in the production.
Kalifa Taylor theatre credits include: Noises Off West End (directed by Lindsay Posner); Hamlet (directed by Ricky Dukes with Lazarus Theatre at Southwark Playhouse).
Can you tell us about the character you play?
Taylor: Helena, the daughter of a renowned recently deceased physician, is determined, honourable, open-hearted and…hopelessly in love with Bertram. The handsome, if somewhat childish, Count in the French court. We follow her journey to win his love as she takes big risks along the way.
What attracted you to the script?
Taylor: I’ve always loved Shakespeare and Alls Well That Ends Well is a lesser-performed play. The audition piece was Helena’s soliloquy about the power of your actions and it resonated with me immediately.
Sioned’s adaptation successfully keeps the core of the plot whilst streamlining the storytelling through 8 actors. Which is no mean feat!
What are you looking forward to in performing in the play?
Taylor: Bringing it to life in front of the audience, they are Helena’s best friend and confidant on her journey, without their support the play is incomplete. I’m also enjoying the challenge of the music numbers. Anne-Marie Lewis’ arrangements of the music underpin the storytelling and are a joy to perform.
What do you think an audience will take from the production?
Taylor: The power and strength that can come from your actions, backing yourself, and going after your dreams with full conviction.
Also how fun and accessible Shakespeare can be, I hope it persuades people to return to Shakespeare in the Squares for silliness in the sun!
