Mia Overfield spoke with The Artiscape on her role in Demon Dentist.
Why do you think David Walliams’ books are so popular among children?
Overfield: I think they all deal with real life issues in which most children experience in their everyday life. His books explore these topics while bringing an essence of fantasy and magic that children love to feel they are a part of. Demon Dentist provokes conversation about child carers, facing your fears and found family, while remaining accessible and fun for children.
Can you tell us about the character you play?
Overfield: I’m in the ensemble and I’m also lucky enough to be the understudy for all of the female roles in the show. I’ve recently had the chance to play some of the characters I’m understudying on stage. It’s quite intimidating getting thrown on last minute but it’s so rewarding when I can put my own spin on these wonderful characters. Having recently played Miss Root and Winnie within days of each other, I felt so blessed to be able to play these two very different strong female characters, both strong-minded but with very different outlooks.
What is your favourite thing about touring?
Overfield: I love getting to visit all of these different cities and towns that I never would have seen if it wasn’t for this tour. It’s a beautiful thing honestly, I feel honoured to have experienced these venues that have so much history behind them.
What do you enjoy about performing in this production?
Overfield: My favourite thing to do during the show, when I’m not on stage of course, is taking a look through the curtains and seeing all of the smiles on people’s faces in the audience, not just the children but the whole families. It’s really lovely seeing them all enjoying our funny little show.
What do you think Children will enjoy about this production?
Overfield: It’s packed with so much fun and adventure, layered with so many interesting relationships that the children get to know and love. It’s a story that’s immersive and easy to lose yourself in, intimate and larger than life all at once.
