I attended the premiere of /And Her at 8th August at 19:30 at The Golden Goose Theatre in London. This is before its two-week run at EdFringe (with C Arts).
/And Her is the debut play by director and PhD researcher Jenny Grober. It is a fictionalised dramatisation of two young girls in history, Jane Grey and her cousin Jane Lumley. Jane Grey, the great-granddaughter of Henry VII, was just 16 when she ascended to the throne. She reigned for just nine days before being replaced by Queen Mary. She and her husband were later executed for treason. Her cousin and companion Jane Lumley was author of the earliest known English translation of Iphigenia at Aulis.
In a dramatisation of the parallels between the Greek play Lumley chose to translate and the tragedy of her cousin’s death, this play imagines a friendship between two uncommonly gifted young women. How might it have shaped their ideas of fate, faith, and womanhood around one another as they delve into the power of language to redefine their destinies in the midst of England’s turbulent religious revolution.
Grober plays the role of Jane Lumley with Anne Whitaker playing Jane Grey in this beautifully executed 60 minute production.
