Based on the much-loved book by Dr. Seuss that has captivated generations of readers, Katie Mitchell adaptation Cat in the Hat promises feline frivolity aplenty and infectious humour. It opens at Rose Theatre Kingston on Wednesday 10 April.

Sally and her brother are in for a rollercoaster ride of havoc and mayhem, when the Cat in the Hat steps onto the mat. The Cat can rescue them from a dull rainy day, but what mischief do they get up to along the way?

The Artiscape spoke to Charley Magalit about her role in the production.

We asked her what she was most looking forward to about performing in this play;

“I am most excited to see and watch children’s reactions while they’re watching our play” she says. “Sometimes when I’m on my teapot I get a bird’s eye view of the audience reactions and facial expressions to all the tricks and stunts we do on stage and to see them be enthralled and happy is addictive!”

How would Magalit describe the character she plays?

“The Fish is a very classy, prim and proper fish. Despite being the house pet, she looks after her “little humans” more than they realize” explains Magalit. “She usually spends her day calm and quiet, while daydreaming about being an opera singer, making her tiny sounds in her bowl. She enjoys an orderly and organized life and avoids and prevents chaos and mayhem at all costs.”

So what other character does Malagit enjoy in the play?

“I SECRETLY enjoy the character of the Cat. I have to admit he is kind of cool, and he does make children happy. I really do enjoy dancing the tango with him (spoiler). BUT he does tend to show off and that usually ends up in a messy situation.”

Finally we asked Magalit, what she thinks the audience will like about this production?

“The audience will love this remake of Cat In The Hat because it has something for everybody” she explains. “Of course, our target audiences are children but anyone who knows how to have a bit of fun will appreciate this heartwarming story.”

She adds “It will capture you visually with a very detailed set and costume by Isla Shaw. The songs and tunes written by Tasha Taylor Johnson are addictive and will stay with you for the rest of the night. And everything is beautifully woven together by the brilliant Suba Das! It’s a lot of fun for the entire family!”

This Rose Theatre Kingston and Curve co-production of The Cat in the Hat runs from Wed 10th to Sun 21th April and is a purrfect treat for all the family.
