“I have lived with these trees and watched them grow. You have been away from here for too long, you don’t see it. Or you have simply forgotten…”
Fix which opened at Pleasance Theatre on 16 January, tells the story of Kevin, a washing machine repairman who finds himself inexplicably drawn to an old woman and her house in the woods. At first it seems like a simple fix but as a storm starts to close in, he is forced to confront the ghosts from his past.
Dark and unsettling, Fix is the debut psychological thriller by Bruntwood Prize longlisted writer, Julie Tsang. A tale of guilt and childhood memory – can we ever really mend what is already broken?
The Artiscape spoke with Mikey Anthony-Howe about his role in the play.
Mikey Anthony-Howe plays Kevin. His previous credits include Privates on Parade (Union Theatre), The Neath (Vault Festival) and Romeo & Juliet (The Everyman Theatre, Cardiff).
We asked him what he was looking forward to in performing in the play.
“I’m certainly looking forward to the intensity of the show” he tells us. “The environment created by the writing and story but also the incredible lighting, sound and even the space itself, really sets it apart from other shows.”
We asked Mikey to tell us about the character he plays.
He tells us “Kevin is an appliance repair man who finds himself out on call to fix a washing machine for a lady who lives in the middle of the woods. Although seemingly pleasant and straight forward he carries a nervous energy and a complicated past.”
So what did Mikey feel the challenges in performing this role?
“The show is a two hander and little over an hour” says Kevin. “Tina and I enter at the top of the show and don’t leave the stage for the length of the play. I think the biggest challenge for this is keeping our energy up throughout and keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. Thankfully we’re supported by amazing writing which keeps the action and story telling non stop.”
Finally what does Mikey see the audience will take away from the show?
“Firstly, I hope the audience will leave the theatre having enjoyed the story telling and chilling atmosphere”, says Kevin. “I would love for the audience to feel completely immersed in our story. I also hope it creates an interest for some of the Chinese folklore and legends that are explored in the play.”
