Just a short walk from the squabbling politicians at Westminster, Trafalgar Studios presents a play set around the time of the Brexit referendum, describing Brexit from a remainer and brexiteer points of view. Written and directed by John Godber, Scary bikers is a comedy about relationships, grief, bicycles and Brexit.

The play is performed by John Godber and his actress-wife Jane Thornton. Don (Godber) is an ex-miner turned hospital porter who meets former teacher Carol (Thornton) at a graveyard. They are visiting the graves of their respective late partners.

Brought together by grief and loneliness, the two cycling enthusiasts decide to cycle through Europe. It happens to be the day of the referendum, the pair set off on a tandem on this hilarious heartfelt journey through Southampton, Bordeaux and on to Florence.

The next day they awake to find out that the Brexit side won and tension begins to grow between them. On top of this, it is getting dark and they are miles from anywhere and Carol realises that she is stuck in the middle of nowhere in Europe with a person that voted to get out of Europe. She grows increasingly frustrated with Don who still believes the “We send the EU £350 million a week. Let’s fund our NHS instead.” slogan put out by Boris Johnson’s leave campaign is actually going to happen.

This play on Brexit gives the human side of the brexit debate and through this entertaining script played beautifully by both actors, we realise we are all on this tandem together as we debate and worry about the future.
