Written and performed by Jeannette Bayardelle, the UK première of the hit Off-Broadway musical SHIDA opened at The Vaults on 11 September. It runs until 13 October.

Set to a soulfully contagious score of rock, jazz, R&B, and gospel music, this is an incredibly powerful 70-minute performance. It is based on a true story of Jeannette’s childhood best friend. A young African-American girl, who has aspirations to be a writer finds herself abused by a family friend. The experience affects her in ways that lead to a life of substance abuse and addiction.

Bayardelle is an amazing talent both as a singer and an actor. Her voice is powerful. She takes us through Shida’s story, performing all the characters in this ‘one-woman show’ in a very convincing and poignant way.

Bayardelle’s powerful and exciting performance on the night I say it brought more than a tear to my eye and was met with a standing ovation from the audience. I highly recommend going to see the show.

SHIDA continues at The Vaults in Launcelot Street, London until 13 October.
