The Baker’s Wife runs from the 6th July to 14th September at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London.

The arrival of a new Baker and his younger wife turns a provincial French village upside down in this cult classic musical from the legendary Stephen Schwartz (composer of GodspellWickedPippin) and Joseph Stein (writer of Fiddler On The Roof).

The Artiscape spoke to Sutara Gayle who is playing Therese in the musical.

What attracted you to the script?

Gayle: When I read it, the first thing that jumped out at me was the sense of community. There’s a lot of upheaval but when all is said and done, the villagers all stick together. The script has a lot of humility and whilst there’s family dysfunctions, there are those that tries to keep the order.

You play Therese. Can you tell us about this character you play?

Gayle: Therese is a God-fearing spinster of the village. She’s a little judgemental but she’s seen a lot and means well. She just wants everyone to abide by the law and have virtue. How hard can that be?

What (if any) research into the character?

Gayle: I looked at the way 1930’s French women carried themselves. What their hobbies were. Also the climate at that time was so much different from today.

What are you looking forward to in performing in this play?

Gayle: Listening to the songs! They’re some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

What do you think the audience will enjoy about this production?

Gayle: I think the audience will enjoy the overall theme of forgiveness and love and nothing can be solved without good old-fashioned humour!
