In a living room near you on Saturday 13 June you can see the exclusive streaming premiere of Mayerling on Marquee TV, the global platform for dance, opera and theatre on demand.

A landmark production from the Royal Opera House in 2018, Kenneth MacMillan’s iconic ballet was a sell-out performance, but now through the platform you will have the opportunity of front row virtual seats.

Since its inception, Marquee TV has been working in partnership with the UK’s leading arts organisations, including the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As part of their collaborative response to the COVID-19 lockdown, since March they have streamed a virtual season of Saturday Premieres, bringing the best of culture into our homes through challenging times with productions including La Traviata from the ROH, Twelfth Night from the RSC and English National Ballet’s production of Giselle choreographed by Akram Khan.

“This has been one of the most challenging periods in history for arts and culture, particularly the performing arts sector. I’m pleased that through Marquee TV we’ve been able to help ensure that audiences are still exposed to this vital content of our much-loved institutions, many of which we are working with in hand in hand to build a more sustainable future model, in both the physical and virtual worlds,” says CEO and Co- Founder Simon Walker

Based on the true story of the deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera in 1889, Mayerling is a dark and intense ballet. It was created for The Royal Ballet in 1978.

With choreography that pushes the boundaries of classical ballet, it is widely regarded as one of Kenneth MacMillan’s finest works.

While large-scale crowd and court scenes show the whole Company off at its dramatic finest, it is MacMillan’s powerful choreography for Rudolf, one of the most technically and emotionally demanding roles in the repertory for male dancers, that makes this ballet so iconic.

This streaming is from The Royal Ballet’s most recent staging of the production from the 2018/2019 live season, starring two of the Company’s brightest stars, Steven McRae as Prince Rudolf and Sarah Lamb as Mary Vetsera.

Mayerling, premiering all day on 13 June and available to stream on demand exclusively on Marquee TV, is part of a season of Saturday Premieres available on the platform. Upcoming performances in the series include the RSC’s Macbeth (6 June), Cendrillon at Glyndebourne (20 June) and Ibsen’s Ghosts by the Norwegian National Ballet (27 June).

In the time of ‘cultural quarantine’, where us ‘arts lovers’ face cancelled productions, closed venues and enforced self-isolation, we can experience these remarkable performances in our living room.
