Written by Christopher J Orton and Jon Robyns, Then, Now & Next is a musical that tells the heartbreaking story of Alex (played by Alice Fearn) and the two loves of her life. The first she meets in a unisex work bathroom. The second is her baby daddy who she meets later in a restaurant. The musical runs until 29 July at Southwark Playhouse.
Fearn’s compelling portrayal of Alex is powerful and convincing, as the plot intertwines past with present with a Then, Now & Next throughout. Joaquin Pedro Valdes plays Stephen who is Alex’s first love. He is a charismatic American guy who she becomes enthralled by. They have a passionate relationship. Even beyond their relationship he will remain the ghost in her relationship with Peter (Peter Hannah), the man she has a child with. He is a sweet guy and devoted to Alex. He will however never get all of her as she is still tied to the memory of her first love. It kinda brings to mind Tom Odell’s song Another Love.
The staging is all in white, as if to say all the colour has been removed from Alex’s life as she gets on with the repetitive nature of life with her second partner.
Then, Now & Next is a beautiful heartwarming portrayal of a woman’s life where she lives a half-life because she can’t get beyond the idealistic love she shared with her past love.
