Theatr Clwyd presents the Christmas pantomime Dick Whittington, “ThePurrrrrfect Rock ‘N’Roll Panto” by Christian Patterson.

Directed by Zoë Waterman, Dick Whittington tells the story of a young orphan who comes to London to seek his fortune on hearing that the city’s streets are paved with gold. His companion on this journey his best friend, a cat named Tomos (Toby Falla). He is soon to find out that London is a dark, busy and lonely place.

The Artiscape interviewed Irish actor Peter Mooney who plays Dick Whittington in the production. His past theatre work includes Once (New Wolsey Theatre/Queens Theatre Hornchurch), Save + Quit (New Theatre Dublin), The Commitments (UK Tour), Eye of the Storm (Theatr na n Óg), Romeo and Juliet (Watermill Theatre), The Commitments (Palace Theatre).

We asked Peter how he would describe his character in the play.

“I’d say he’s endearing, good-natured and maybe little on the dim side!” describes Mooney. “He’s wonderfully optimistic though, which is great fun. He arrives in Mold bright eyed and bushy tailed and when he gets offered a job as a “washer-upperer”, he’s delighted. Sort of tells you all you need to know!”

We asked him what are the particular challenges he came across in playing the role.

He explained, “for me, it’s definitely the singing and dancing. I’ve done a fair bit of ensemble singing in previous shows, but nothing this exposed every night. As for the movement, it feels like I’ve got two left feet sometimes! But I think I’m making progress, slowly but surely…”

What was he looking forward to in acting in this production?

“What’s great about Dick is that he isn’t your typical panto lead male” he explains. “He’s not a prince whose only role is to stand there and looks pretty. He has a bit of craic with the audience, in somewhat the same way as the Dame does. So I get to play a silly side to him as well as being the romantic lead, which is a dynamic I’m really enjoying”.

What will an audience enjoy in this production?

“If you’ve never seen an actor-musician show before, that’s definitely the first thing that will jump out at you,” says Peter. “Every single bit of the music is played live by the cast, which is an amazing thing for an audience to experience. It’s also just such fantastic fun! Hilarious and high energy from the word go, Come see it! “

Theatr Clwyd’s Dick Whittington show runs from 23 November 2018 to Saturday 19 January 2019.
