Emily Harrigan

Are you familiar with David Walliams’ work?

Harrigan: I grew up with David’s work on the telly and knew that he had major success as a children’s author. The first time I read some of his work however, was when I was auditioning for the role. I was actually on holiday at the time and flew back especially for my audition!

What attracted you to the script?

Harrigan: The book has so much heart. Behind the comedy and fun there’s also a huge message about family, love and overcoming incredible odds. And when I heard there were going to be songs as well I couldn’t refuse being a part!

Can you tell us about the the character you play?

Harrigan: Miss Root is our villain. She has hidden herself under a dentist disguise to cause havoc In Alfie’s town. Most importantly she LOVES being the villain! There’s a show stopping jazzy number in Act Two in which her true self is revealed – and you’ll have to come and watch it to see!

How do you research a role like this?

I have taken some inspiration from many larger than life villainous characters including Mrs Trunchbull, Cruella De Vil and the Wicked Witch of the West. Thankfully David Walliams has given us a terrific character description in the book which I used a lot in rehearsals to create the character that you see on stage.

What do you think children will love about this show?

Harrigan: I absolutely adore Raj, he only appears in act 2 of our show but you instantly fall in love with him! Even though I have heard his scenes hundreds of Ames they sAll always make me laugh.

I feel very grateful that our show is full of weird and wonderful characters and it’s a joy to be given the opportunity to create them every day live on stage!
